The Village runs between 14th and Houston and the Hudson and East Rivers. It is divided by Broadway, which creates two distinct neighborhoods: The West Village and the East Village.
The West Village was once a bohemian center, but now is more family oriented. The neighborhood is cute and quaint with row houses, tree lined, streets, and multiple shops where you can buy cupcakes, organic clothes, and $200 sweater for your dog.
The East Village, also known as the Bowery, is the more rebellious of the two neighborhoods and as such has been a center of arts and culture for decades. The East Village is considered the birthplace of punk music, was a stronghold of the Beat Generation, and was the setting for the acclaimed musical RENT.
Both neighborhoods are home to great boutiques, shops, bars and restaurants, and both are especially walkable.
