Greenwich Village
Greenwich Village or, more simply, just the "Village," is recognized as the bohemian capital of the country, and has been home to countless writers, poets, artists, musicians and actors. It is an exciting, vibrant enclave of avant-garde and alternative culture. Dozens of cultural and popular icons got their start in the Village's nightclub, theater, and coffeehouse scene during the 1950s, 1960s, and early 1970s, notably Barbra Streisand, Peter, Paul, and Mary, Simon and Garfunkel, Jackson Browne, Joan Baez, The Velvet Underground, Richie Havens, Maria Muldaur and Jimi Hendrix.
The Village is anchored by Washington Square Park and is home to New York University, whose buildings and students are a major presence in the neighborhood. The area is bounded by Houston Street, 14th Street, Broadway and Hudson Street. The population is upper-middle-class and, because of the student population, relatively young.
As one would expect, the neighborhood is full of restaurants, nightclubs, bars and student hangouts. There are also a number of small, Off-Broadway theaters that put on experimental plays that one can enjoy at a fraction of the cost of a Broadway play. Besides Washington Square Park, where you can find interesting things happening any time of day, the area is dotted with smaller parks and playgrounds.
Within easy walking distance are the neighborhoods of SoHo, Chelsea, Union Square, the West Village and the newly fashionable Meatpacking District, home to some of the City's fanciest, priciest and most celebrity-heavy restaurants.
